Cigarettes After Sex: an American ambient pop group
Hello, guys! welcome to my very first blog. Before getting to know what kind of this blog is, I will talk a little bit about myself first.
My name is Jinjuta or you can call me Fong. I am a sophomore student from the faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Thammasat University. From now on, I will be updating my blog every week with many things about the entertainment which I am interested in such as the bands, the movies, the music and so on. So, I hope you will enjoy and like it.
Today, I am going to show you about the band called Cigarettes After Sex which is the band I like the most. I just came across one of their songs on youtube. Firstly, I listened to their song because the name was very strange. At that time, when the melody came up, I started completely loving that song called "Affection". Moreover, I cannot tell that the singer is a male or female because he has a beautiful, warm, soft and relaxing voice. I have no idea how a male can make his voice sound this soft. It made me melt. Then, I tried to listen to the other songs of them and I found it very very wonderful and amazing.
Cigarettes After Sex is an ambient pop group based out of Brooklyn, NY and is led by songwriter Greg Gonzalez, praised for his androgynous voice. The band was formed almost accidentally in 2008. The group has been host to a number of different musical collaborators consisting of keyboardist Phillip Tubbs, bassist Randy Miller, and drummer Jacob Tomsky, working through a variety of sounds since its inception. In the spring of 2012 Cigarettes After Sex recorded their first EP over the course of a single night in the stairway of a four-story building.
Since then they have become a viral phenomenon, generating over a hundred million views on YouTube for their exquisite yearning, graceful pop noir. Their self-titled debut album arrives on June 9, 2017 on Partisan Records. "Melancholic, androgynous pop noir set in smoke-filled darkness." - Rolling Stone "Cigarettes After Sex’s sound is elemental, hazy, and romantic, but with a noir edge underneath Gonzalez’s androgynous voice. As the band’s name suggests, it’s reminiscent of lying in bed, but its ambient qualities don’t prevent it from being music you can dance to." - Noisey
This aesthetic is tied together with black and white images by the surrealist photographer Man Ray, with I. using the shot “Anatomies” of a woman’s upper chest, her head thrown back, while their latest single “Affection” is covered by “Rayograph,” an image of a feather. It’s delicate and otherworldly.
The band's first EP, I., was released in 2012 with the singles "Affection" and "K." following in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
So, I will show you some of the famous songs of this band. Let's begin with "Affection" This song is about falling in love with someone without telling them. It conveys the meaning straightforwardly.
This song can be found so chilled out. It has played the instruments that seem so effortless. In my opinion, I think the interesting point of this song is the way the lyrics are sung in a monotone way. It is such a beautiful love song. Actually, it is more kind of an affectionate song than a love song to me. Go check it out!
