'Manchild' the first album from Phum Viphurit

As the previous blog, I just mentioned to 'Phum Viphurit', a young Thai solo singer-songwriter who has been fall in love with authentic and acoustic melodies which inspired him in creating his own unique style of alternative indie folk. Because he grew up in New Zealand, his skill of English language is very perfect and that's reflected on his solid songwriting and singing in English. It is not very often that you will find a Thai solo singer that writing songs, singing and performing in English. So, I want you guy to try to listen to his songs which are quite different from the other Thai artists in these days.

On the early February this year, he released the album "Manchild" which is the first time that he composed, produced and arranged songs by himself. It's got a total of 9 songs which he wrote from his own experiences. This album basically represents his life story.

All 9 songs are kind of alternative folk music. He was inspired by the bands like Bombay Bicycle Club and Young The Giant which were some of the first indie band he listened to. They all have made a big impression on him. So, this is the main influences for him which come out naturally when he writes a song.

I will begin with a song called "Adore", the first single released through Rats Records. It was the song that makes him well-known by his catchy melody which is easy to understand. Adore was written in the moment that he was very happy that is so obviously contrast to another song called "Trial & Error" which he tried to tell his sadness when he was broken heart. It is like being a human which has both good and bad moments. But every moment we have gone through, we will keep it as a memory anyway.

The next one is "Strangers in A Dream" which is faster than the 2 previous songs. It is one of the songs that is easy to understand.

"Long Gone", another song which has more fun melody. It was a perfect tune in style of alternative folk music. This song was selected to be made an official music video which Phum produced and directed by himself. He made this to show his fondness of clothing and hair styling in the late of 90's.

The dreamy melody like "The Art of Detaching One's Heart" which has Jenny from Jenny & The Scallywags as another sound in the song. It was a perfect dream song.

Next is "Sweet Hurricane" which is my favorite one from this album. This song is quite dreamy and haunting at the same time. Those who like the tones of 'Trial & Error' and 'The Art of Detaching One's Heart' may like this song as well.

Paper Throne

Beg

This album is a good treat for the ears. Every song is very authentic and relevant to him. No matter what style of music it comes out, it will be a collection of works which emphasizes on his signature mellow vibe. It best describes his life story and you will hear some dreamy tones and other alternative influences also.

Anyway, some of you might not understand why his songs are all in English. In his interview, he said that he planned on writing songs in Thai someday. As he has been in New Zealand for many years, his Thai writing skill is not that strong right now but it is getting better, so it will be some decent Thai lyrics from him in the future. STAY TUNED!!
